Research Activities

I completed my undergraduate studies with dual specialisations in Genetics and Bioengineering and graduated with the research project on identifying the correlation of IL18-R1 gene polymorphism and Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia in the Turkish population.

Subsequently, I conducted extensive research on mitochondrial metabolism through the Warburg effect and mass spectrometry-based post-translational modifications, utilising six different healthy and cancerous human cell lines during my master’s studies, and graduated with high honours. 

For my PhD, I enrolled in the Molecular Biology and Medicine of the Lung (MBML) program and the International Giessen Graduate Centre for Life Sciences (GGL) in Germany. My research focused on pioneering in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo design and delivery of the CRISPR-Cas9 genome engineering system, alongside measuring metabolic alterations using Oroboros and Seahorse respirometry. I also gained expertise in live imaging of cells and lung tissues, histological and stereological sample preparation, evaluation of lung structures, primary cell isolation and culture from mice, and working with immortalised cell lines, among other molecular and metabolic assessments.I am deeply passionate about pursuing an academic career, with a specific focus on the genomic, proteomic, and metabolic aspects of reprogramming. This is pivotal for understanding mitochondrial dysfunction and the development of various diseases, including neurodegenerative, cardiopulmonary, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer, as well as genomic instability and post-translational modifications.
