Research Activities
Research in our laboratory is focused on the pathogenesis of human malaria, in particular of malaria in pregnancy. A major aim of this research is to investigate the interaction Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes with host cells and tissues, with a focus on the placenta and maternal monocytes. Our long-term goal is to uncover mechanisms of disease and correlates of protection to inform the design and development of novel intervention strategies to alleviate the burden of malaria in pregnancy.Techniques/Expertise
- Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes placental adhesion assay using flow cytometry
- Flow cytometric analysis of levels of antibodies to surface antigens of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes
- Real time quantitative PCR-based quantification of cytokine gene expression
- Immunohistochemical analysis of placental tissue
- Amino acid uptake by placental tissue or placental cell lines
