Research Activities

I have previously worked with P. Falciparum malaria in collaboration with a group from University of California San Francisco, specifically studying drug resistance & genetic factors underlying treatment outcomes in Uganda. To this end, I evaluated a high throughput genotypic technique for surveillance of SNPs mediating drug resistance; and characterized the distribution of markers & their clinical relevance. And we managed to publish three papers out of this work, which can be accessed online. To date I have expanded my interests to Onchocerciasis eradication through novel molecular and genomic tools. Here we aim to develop novel diagnostic tools for onchocerciasis & identify genetic markers for disease surveillance across different epidemiological zones. So far, I have developed a Loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for point of care applications with regards to onchocerciasis. Cumulatively, I have gained a lot of experience in molecular epidemiology specifically employing state of the art genomic tools to solve prominent infectious disease problems.
